The Atlanta- based landscape architecture and land planning firm of Land Plus Associates has been recognized as an award winner in the 3rd Annual Phillip Trammel Shutze Awards sponsored by the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America. Land Plus was the only Landscape/Garden Design award presented. It’s project “An English Country Estate” was singled out for excellence in traditional design.
For the winning project, Land Plus transformed a five- acre parcel in an exclusive Atlanta neighborhood into a classically inspired estate property. Using carefully designed site elements to marry the architect’s vision for the home with the homeowners’ goals for the bucolic setting, the resulting English country estate blends a strong architectural design statement with refined site elements and elegant landscape design.
Working with the topographic conditions of the property, the designers were inspired to create spaces in the landscape to support the specific activities typical of estate homes. A series of gardens taking the shape of outdoor rooms, in traditional English style, were created using walls and hedges to extend the architecture into the surrounding landscape. These outdoor rooms were incorporated in the design; a formal entertaining lawn, and elegant pool area with open- air garden pavilion, a vegetable garden, a kitchen garden for outdoor dining, an elegant family motor court, and a receiving garden at the entrance to the home. Key features of the design were the long drive arranged to be reminiscent of a gravel country lane, and a park-like system of trails throughout the property, with naturalized plantings. The use of mature, specimen plant material throughout the project creates a sense of timelessness and long-established presence.
